I love square, monochromatic portraits. Animals and birds are particularly suited to this because removing colour allows you to put their various statures and environments on an equal footing. It also allows for far more contrast and tonal latitude than would be acceptable in colour, making the graphic quality of the images more consistent and more central. For me, a successful animal portrait captures both the individuality of the creature and the formality of the composition.
